The BJPBJP secured 9 out of 10 mayoral posts, with an Independent winning the remaining seat. Meanwhile, Congress’s decision to contest under its own symbol backfired, exposing its weaknesses at the grassroots level.
This loss adds to the party’s mounting troubles in Haryana. After failing to win a single mayoral seat, Congress now faces another setback following its third consecutive Assembly election defeat to the BJP last year—an election it was once expected to win.
Internal disarray and infighting are being blamed for Congress’s poor performance. Frustrated leaders point to the high command’s failure to resolve internal conflicts or even appoint a Legislature Party leader, five months after the Assembly results.
Reacting to the mayoral wipeout, senior Congress leader and former six-time MLA Sampat Singh cautioned that the party was losing precious time. ‘A strong organization must be built as soon as possible. We need unity and collective efforts to restore confidence among party workers across the state,’ he said.
Many CongressCongress leaders had initially opposed contesting the March 2 municipal polls, arguing they came too soon after the BJP’s sweeping Assembly victory. ‘Our weaknesses at the local level are now fully exposed. If we hadn’t contested, at least we could have avoided this embarrassment,’ admitted a Congress leader.
